Back at Summit Camp with IGERT Cohort #2
Kangerlussuaq is close to sea level while Summit Camp is about two miles above sea level. When getting off our plane, we immediately realized that anything involving physical activity will be a challenge. We unpacked and readied our field gear and listened to lectures on ice core science, perfect activities for letting our our bodies acclimatize to the altitude. While this this waiting necessary, not being able to immediately get started on our projects is an exercise in patience.
We settled into our new abodes for the week in Tent City, a grid of 25 winterized tents. The yellow fabric stands out as a cheerful beacon against the otherwise colorless landscape. Later we outlined our strategies for potential field projects, and hoped that the weather would cooperate.
