Over the past two weeks Kangerlussuaq has exploded with millions of mosquitoes.
[Two females (left) and two males (right) sacrificed in the name of science. Note the modified non-blood sucking mouthparts of the males.]
I’ve been getting a lot of great questions from folks in town- mostly, how long do they live?- and even gave a few tours of the mosquito lab last weekend. This week I have been working on a flyer to hang up around town with a few basic mosquito facts and some photos.
Here are a few mosquito facts, in English and Greenlandic:
- Only the female mosquitoes will bite you. Ippernaat arnavissat taamaallaat kiisisarput/kapisisarput.
- The male mosquitoes are black and furry and only eat flower nectar. Ippernaat angutivissat qernertuupput meqqoqarlutik, naasuillu isserinik taamaallaat inuussuteqartuullutik.
- Mosquitoes can take up to 30 cl of blood a day from one caribou. Ippernat 30 cl‐it angullugit tuttuminngaanniit ataatsimiit ullormut aammik milluaasinnaapput.
