The ladies of C4 have all arrived in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland! The four of us, along with our trusty leader Mary Albert, spent the day preparing for our trip to Summit tomorrow. After breakfast, we headed off to the warehouse to pick out our Extreme Cold Weather (ECW) gear. Susan, the CPS staff helping us out, told us to just go ahead and shop around! Rows of Carhartt overalls, warm coats, mittens and gloves, and big winter boots awaited our perusal.
We had fun trying on the overalls.
Alden found a sweet pair of down pants to try on — what a look!
With our sleep kits bursting with our warm sleeping bags and all the ECW gear, we are ready for Summit!
We spent the rest of the day exploring Kangerlussuaq. First, we headed out to find fish fossils in raised deltas near the airport. After we found some excellent specimens, we hiked up Black Ridge, getting great views out toward the fjord and to the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Although today we had just a glimpse of the ice, tomorrow we will be surrounded by it. We are all so excited to head to Summit — but first a good night’s sleep so we can adjust quickly to the altitude! Check back soon to hear about our adventures on the top of the ice!
